The annual Griswald family vacation

When I saw the button flowers in the header at Artsy-Craftsy Babe I knew I had to make them right now. I didn't even take enough time to figure out that she has a very helpful tutorial . Using vintage buttons makes it a bit tricky, it's hard to find 6 nearly matching buttons for the outer petals, but I LOVE them. I can see myself making a million of them.

Well, enough to fill the wire tree at least.

We are off to Chicago for our annual vacation. There will be flea marketing, visits to IKEA, visits to the aquarium, visits to the children's museum, and if the weather holds some sand castle building on the beach.

We are staying a bit longer than we usually do, and gas (and lodging and food and attractions and ... and ... and ...) is crazy expensive, so if you have any super cheap or free things to do with kids ideas, please share them quickly! :-)

I will see you all next week, have a lovely weekend.

  1. Quick question (you can answer when you get back) what Flea markets do you go to in Chicago? I am planning a trip there this summer and would love some tips!

  2. The flowers are really cute!

Chicago is great it has been a while since I have been there but I seem to recall that they have specials that you can get in free of reduced admission if you go on a weekday. Maybe check with the museums. Also the public library is always a great place to visit. They often have fun events too. Have a great trip!!

  3. The flowers look great! Have fun on your trip - I've never been to Chicago, so I don't have any tips, but I hope you have a great time!

  4. How great that you come to Chicago for your annual vacation! Be prepared, though. The sales tax in Cook county is almost at 10% now which makes shopping at Ikea less of an advantage. The Bolingbrook Ikea is outside of Cook county, so maybe go to that one instead?

Do you go to the Kane County Flea Market? That one is huge!

  5. Those flowers are the cutest! I have to make some! I'm curious about the flea markets you go to, too. Lincoln Park Zoo is free and I know there's a bus that goes there (on the weekends it's bus 151). Wandering around Navy Pier is fun, though I assume you are doing that already since you said you're going to the children's museum. As far as low cost things to do, it looks like there's a (kite festival on Saturday that's free, a parade, and Children's Humanities Festival. If you have your car and feel like driving a little ways north, Long Grove is having their chocolate festival this weekend. LG is a quaint little historic town and Long Grove Confectionary is well know in this area for their chocolate - especially chocolate strawberries. I hope that gives you some ideas!

  8. Have fun!! I assume you're headed out to Kane County flea market this weekend. I'm jealous. Don't forget to wander around downtown Geneva while you're out there. Nice parks, shops, ice cream, etc. My girls like Oz Park on Webster, pulling the cord for our stop on the bus, and watching people: all free or nearly free :) Buon viaggio.
