Yesterday I had to remind myself that the only way to eat this elephant is one bite at a time. So I started by completely tidying up the messes in the living room.
It's not all the way done yet, but hanging curtains and some art on the walls went a long way to making this room feel "finished."
How about a before and after tour?

This room was my grandparents formal living room. You know, the room that you only used on Christmas? I am pretty sure that couch had been here since they day they moved in in 1970.

My pottery is temporarily at home on some bookcases where the clock and the pink lamp were in the first photo. (I say temporary because I am really hoping to get a built in there with storage for DVD's and stuff underneath the pottery. And clearly the pottery needs more space, it's too crowded!)

Our IKEA Ektorp chaises are in the corner where the bookcases where. I am thinking of hanging a chandelier from that bird cage stand.

My grandparents always had a wallpaper mural on the wall behind the couch.

This after sort of blows me away. Is that really the same room? (The pictures are hung a little high for my liking, but we have a bouncy 5 year old. LOL)

The front of the room, complete with horrible vertical blinds.

The window just before we ripped it out for nice new windows.

And after hanging curtains yesterday.
It's kinda crazy good now, eh?
One thing I have noticed is that I feel sheltered differently in this house. My brain knows that the old house was sheltering us just as well, but somehow it just feels different to be here. Safer, tighter, quieter, warmer, I can't really put my finger on the feeling, but it's there.
And when I look at pictures like this I cannot even believe how far we have come in so little time.
Just wow.
Back tomorrow with more!
Beautiful. Just beautiful. How nice that you were able to capture before and after photos. It's so important to have those memories. My parents had a mural on their dining room wall that looks very very similar to the mural on your former wall. You've done so much. I love the idea of hanging a chandelier on the birdcage stand. Keep the pics coming. Love them!!
ReplyDeleteIt looks beautiful. I'm so glad you have that snug feeling. :)
ReplyDeleteLove the room!
ReplyDeleteAlthough I love vintage, I really don’t understand what the appeal was about those couch colors. Just painting the wall makes such a huge difference. I LOVE the couches. Aren’t you afraid about the covers though? I would love white, but I’m afraid after a few weeks they would look horrible. It’s the reason we will have my husbands hand-me-down leather . . . it’s not good.
ReplyDeletewow. what a difference, a beautiful difference.
ReplyDeleteits coming along very nicely
Just WOW! It looks so inviting. Did you keep any of that furniture? Those chairs would look great with a little paint and fabric make-over.
ReplyDeleteLove the before and after. And by the way... every time I look at our "sewing room exploded" picture I giggle and think of my "studio," um, that is messy table in a corner by the fish tank in the corner of the weight room portion of the basement.Um yeah... I'm thinking most of my house is a "before" photo! HA
ReplyDeleteoops... my keyboard is acting up. That was supposed to say "your" not "our" in reference to the picture. I am NOT happy with my computer!
ReplyDeletePlease keep the before and after and progress photos coming. I love seeing what you are doing with this house!
ReplyDeleteOh, that gold couch - I don't think I've ever seen anything quite like that. It is very cool you've got befores and afters, and your afters are amazing. Hope you're loving it.
ReplyDeleteThis is so exciting! I LOVE your new living room!

ReplyDeleteMy little "word" last year was "content" and thats just the word that comes to mind when I'm reading your posts about your new house. Feeling all safe and warm in your new old house....thats what homes are supposed to be....a safe haven......Best Wishes for 2010!
I love it! That yellow color is so warm and happy. I'm so glad you are starting to settle in.
ReplyDeleteThanks for your advice on the mat board. I've thought of cutting my own, but can see it turning out a big mess. The tutorials I find require you have special eqiptment. All I have is an exacto knive and straight edge. Any tips or links to tutorials you know of?
Cozy! Congratulations for a job well done.
ReplyDeleteIts looking lovely! So jealous of your pottery, and that's some couch!
